Tyres are consumable, expensive, safety-critical and almost entirely manageable. In heavy fleets they commonly rank third in operating cost behind fuel and driver wages, and the gap between a well-run and a neglected tyre programme is large.
What drives tyre cost
Pressure. Under-inflation is the dominant cause of premature tyre failure and of increased rolling resistance. Running significantly under the correct pressure measurably shortens tyre life and increases fuel consumption. It is also invisible without measurement — a heavy vehicle tyre can be substantially under-inflated and look normal.
Alignment. Misalignment causes irregular wear that can halve tyre life. It is cheap to check and frequently neglected.
Driving style. Harsh acceleration, hard cornering and heavy braking accelerate wear substantially. This overlaps with driver behaviour programmes and is one of the clearest financial returns from them.
Load and specification. Wrong tyre specification for the duty — load index, speed rating, tread pattern — causes both premature wear and safety risk.
Road surface and route type. Urban stop-start work with kerbing wears tyres far faster than motorway running.
Retread policy. Where casings are managed properly, retreading substantially reduces cost per kilometre in heavy fleets.
A cheaper tyre with shorter life and higher rolling resistance costs more. Track removal mileage by brand, position and application, and compare on cost per kilometre including fuel effects.
Building a tyre programme
1. Pressure management.
- Defined pressures per axle and application, published and posted

- Nitrogen inflation where the operation supports it, primarily for pressure stability
2. Tread and condition inspection.

3. Rotation and position management.

- Scrap analysis: why each casing was scrapped, which reveals systematic problems

- Emergency call-out terms and response times, which matter more than the tyre price when a vehicle is stranded

Recording removal reason is what turns tyre data into management information: regular wear, irregular wear, impact damage, puncture, sidewall damage, or age. A fleet with a high proportion of impact and kerbing damage has a driving or route problem, not a tyre problem.
Safety and compliance
Tyres are a leading cause of roadside prohibitions and a contributor to serious incidents. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, but consistently include minimum tread depth, condition free from specified damage, correct load and speed rating, and evidence of regular inspection.
Practical controls: daily walkaround checks that genuinely include tyres, a defect process that takes a vehicle off the road for an unsafe tyre without negotiation, and inspection records that survive an audit.
Where fleets lose money
- Running to the legal limit rather than a policy limit, producing prohibitions and roadside failures

Common questions
Are premium tyres worth the extra cost?
Frequently in high-mileage applications, where longer life and lower rolling resistance more than offset the price. Less so in low-mileage urban work where tyres are more likely to be removed for damage than for wear. Measure cost per kilometre in your own operation rather than assuming either way.
Is tyre pressure monitoring worth fitting?
In heavy fleets and high-mileage operations, generally yes — under-inflation is common, costly and otherwise undetectable between checks. In low-mileage light fleets with disciplined checks, the case is weaker.
Should we retread?
In heavy fleets with good casing management, retreading meaningfully reduces cost per kilometre and is standard practice. It requires disciplined casing tracking and a reputable supplier; without both, the savings evaporate in scrapped casings.
How often should tyres be checked?
Visual inspection daily as part of the walkaround, with formal pressure and tread measurement at defined intervals appropriate to your operation. The interval matters less than that the checks are genuinely performed and recorded.
What causes irregular wear?
Most commonly alignment, suspension wear, incorrect pressure or unbalanced loading. Irregular wear is a symptom, and replacing the tyre without diagnosing the cause guarantees the new one wears the same way.
