Video telematics is the fastest-growing segment of fleet technology and the most sensitive. It delivers real, measurable benefits in collision defence and driver coaching, and it introduces genuine privacy obligations that are easy to get wrong.
The system types
Road-facing only. A single forward camera recording continuously and saving clips on events. Lowest cost, lowest sensitivity, and it captures the evidence that matters in most collision disputes.
Dual-facing. Adds an in-cab camera pointed at the driver. Enables fatigue and distraction detection, and raises the privacy and industrial-relations stakes considerably.
Multi-camera. Adds side, rear and cargo cameras. Used in heavy vehicles, waste collection and anywhere manoeuvring incidents dominate.
AI-triggered event capture. On-device analysis flags following distance, distraction, phone use, seat belt, drowsiness and lane departure, uploading only the relevant clips.
Live-view capable. Streaming on demand. Useful in incident response, and the single most contentious feature with drivers.
The genuine benefits
Collision defence. In disputes over fault, contemporaneous video is decisive. Fleets consistently report that exonerating footage in a minority of incidents pays for a large part of the system cost, because the avoided claims are large.
Insurance. Many insurers offer improved terms for fleets with video and an active safety programme. Get this quantified by your broker before purchase — it is a real part of the business case and it varies widely.
Coaching. Video makes coaching specific. "You were following too closely on Tuesday" is arguable; a ten-second clip is not.
Exoneration of drivers. Worth stating explicitly, because it is the benefit that matters most to the people being filmed. A driver wrongly blamed for an incident is protected by the same system they were suspicious of.
Training material. Anonymised real footage from your own operation is far more effective than generic training video.
The workload nobody budgets for
Video generates events. Events require review. Review requires a person.
A fleet of 100 vehicles with AI triggering can generate hundreds of flagged events per week. Without a defined review process, one of two things happens: everything is reviewed and someone's job disappears into it, or nothing is reviewed and the system becomes expensive storage.

Tuning thresholds matters enormously. Default sensitivity often generates noise from ordinary urban driving, and a review queue full of non-events destroys the programme's credibility in a month.
Privacy and legal obligations
Video of identifiable people is personal data almost everywhere, and video of the inside of a cab is particularly sensitive.
Practical requirements in GDPR jurisdictions and increasingly elsewhere:
- Data protection impact assessment before deployment — for driver-facing systems this is generally mandatory, not optional.
- Lawful basis documented, usually legitimate interest with a balancing test that considers less intrusive alternatives.
- Necessity and proportionality: event-triggered capture is far easier to justify than continuous recording of the cab.
- Transparency: drivers informed of what is recorded, when, who can see it, and for how long.
- Third parties: members of the public are captured too. Signage on the vehicle, and a process for subject access requests from outside the company.
- Access control: strictly limited, logged, and never available for casual browsing by managers.
- Retention: short by default — commonly days for routine footage — with longer retention only for incidents under investigation.

Rolling it out well
- Consult representatives and drivers before selecting a system, not after.
- Publish a clear policy: what is recorded, when, who sees it, how long it is kept, and explicitly what it will not be used for.
- Start with road-facing only if driver-facing is contentious. You can extend later on evidence.
- Tune thresholds during a pilot; do not go live on defaults.
- Use the first exoneration case publicly and prominently — it changes the internal conversation faster than any policy document.
- Never use footage for trivial disciplinary matters. One misuse ends the goodwill permanently.
Frequently asked questions
Are driver-facing cameras legal?
In most jurisdictions yes, subject to conditions: a documented assessment, transparency, proportionality and often consultation. Legality is not the whole question — a system that is legal but resented delivers less than a road-facing system the workforce accepts.
How much data does video telematics use?
Considerably more than tracking. Event-triggered upload of short clips is manageable; continuous upload or frequent live streaming is not, and it is where unexpected cellular costs arise. Confirm data allowances and overage charges in the contract.
Can drivers request footage of themselves?
Under GDPR and similar regimes, individuals generally have a right of access to personal data about them, including video, subject to the rights of others appearing in it. Build a process for handling this rather than treating each request as an exception.
Does video reduce collisions?
Fleets running structured coaching programmes based on video events commonly report meaningful reductions in incident rates. Fleets that install cameras without a coaching process typically report little change — the camera is not the intervention, the coaching is.
How long should footage be kept?
As short as your purpose allows: often days for routine event clips, with incident footage preserved under a legal hold. Long default retention of cab footage is difficult to justify and expensive to store.
